This weekend the Sheffield 2nd Team take on old foes Harrogate in the Yorkshire Merit League. Sheffield have made a positive start to the 2s season but games against strong opposition have seen them only win one of three games, albeit a stonking 61 – 0 win over Yarnbury.
Following last weekend’s disappointment in the narrow home loss to Derby, the 2s will be looking to recover against a team who were undone on two occasions last year by the boys in blue. 45 – 15 and a much tighter but equally impressive 19 – 5.
There are some enforced changes in the 2s ranks following the need to promote some key performers into the 1st XV but the side still remains strong. Everyone at Abbeydale will, no doubt, be thrilled to welcome club stalwart Gaz Morley into the side for his first outing of the season.
The 3rd team welcome local rivals Sheffield Oaks 2s to Abbeydale and will be wanting to maintain the terrific early season form that has been so noticeable, four wins from four against mainly 2nd team opposition is no mean feat and the impressive results underline the ability of this team throughout backs and forwards. 27-10 over Thorn 2s, 51-0 against Mosborough 2s and a free-scoring 45-26 over Wath 3s last weekend leave no doubt that Ben Broomhead’s side go out intending to entertain.
Whichever pitch you pick this weekend, one thing is assured, entertaining rugby of an excellent standard, played by a questionable group of characters!
